         Bricklayers - Stone masonory

Delivery and storage

All units are delivered shrink wrapped on wooden pallets with protective packaging in between units. The shrinkwrap should not be removed until the units are needed. Pallets must be stored on level ground and should not be stacked on top of each other. Care must be exercised in handling to prevent chipping or staining and unprotected ropes and chains must not be used for hoisting.

Installation

Cast stone should only be fitted by suitably experienced operatives and should not be used to support scaffolding poles, planks etc..

All units should be laid and adjusted to final position while the mortar is still plastic. Mortar exuding from the joints should be cut away without smearing the face of the unit. The laying and protection of cast stone subject to inclement or cold weather working should be in accordance with BS 5628: Part 3.

During construction it is advisable to protect finished work using appropriate gauge polythene sheeting. This prevents mortar drips, mastic, paint and other construction materials staining or adhering to the cast stone. Mortar, in particular, is very difficult to remove.

Mortars

It is vital that the correct grade of mortar is used when installing cast stone products, and must be able to resist frost and develop durability fairly quickly but still able to accommodate initial movement. To improve the water repellent quality of the joint in exposed conditions, proprietary water proofers can be added to the mortar.

Bedding and jointing

All architectural dressings are designed to be fixed with 4mm joints between units. Locating holes should be completely filled with neat cement and the dowels twisted around to assist in adhesion and the surface finished flush

To reduce the risk of cracking in long cills with stooling only the ends should be bedded in mortar. The joint below should be left open and should be pointed only on completion of the masonry.

Pointing

If pointing is required the joints should be raked back approximately 15mm and neatly filled with stiff mortar paste made up from the pointing mix which can be provided upon request.
