ASPHALT PATH
Repairing sunken and missing areas YOU WILL NEED Garden fork, spade, rubble and stones, earth rammer, black bitumen primer, cheap brush, bagged repair macadam, rake. Possibly: garden roller. Hollows and holes in the surface of the path, which collect puddles, are usually the result of poor preparation of the foundations. Dig out the sunken or damaged areas of asphalt to expose the undersoil. Dig out some of the soil and then ram in rubble and stones, tamping them down firmly with a earth rammer. Coat the area with black bitumen primer, using a cheap brush that you can throw away afterwards. Then apply new repair macadam. Rake it out so that it is just above the level of the path. Tamp it down and roll it with a garden roller if the area is large. Recoating a dry, crumbling surface YOU WILL NEED Cold-applied bitumen, old watering can, gloves.
As asphalt dries out over the years, it loses its adhesion and becomes crumbly. You can correct this by applying a coating of cold-applied bitumen as a binder. The bitumen flows like treacle and finds its own level. An old watering can is ideal for pouring on the bitumen, but you will have to throw the can away afterwards. This can be a messy job, so protect your hands with an old pair of gloves. Keep the path out of service until the bitumen has hardened completely. Usually, this takes about 24 hours, depending on the weather. Repairing collapsed path edges The edges of an asphalt path can crumble and collapse with constant use, but they can be patched successfully. YOU WILL NEED Spade, timber battens (about 2.5 cm (1 in) thick and as wide as the path height), wooden pegs, club hammer, black bitumen primer, bagged repair macadam, rake, macadam rammer. Possibly: builder's line or string and sticks.
Dig away the edge that has collapsed and make sure that the foundation that is exposed is firm. Remove any loose, or crumbling pieces of asphalt Hold the batten on edge and align it with the rest of the path. For a long run of path, establish a straight line by using a builder's line or a length of garden string tied to two sticks. Fix the batten firmly in place by driving in wooden pegs with a club hammer. Then coat the area to be repaired (but not the timber) with black bitumen primer, using a cheap brush that can be thrown away afterwards. Fill in up to the batten with repair macadam. Tamp until firm, then carefully remove the batten. Do not walk on the path for 24 hours. REINFORCING AN ASPHALT PATH
