Repairing a scratched bath tube or basin

Baths & basins Repairing a scratched plastic bath

YOU WILL NEED Fine wire wool, metol polish, cloth. Possibly: wet-and-dry abrasive paper.

Most modern plastic baths are tough and hard-wearing, but their appearance may be marred by surface scratches.

To remove shallow scratches from the bath's surface, rub them with fine wire wool (but not with abrasive paper or an abrasive cleaner). Finish off and restore the shine by polishing the repaired area with a metal polish.

For a deeper scratch, try gentle rubbing with a very fine grade of wet-and-dry abrasive paper, used wet. Don't replace it as it wears smooth, but do keep it wet. Finish with metal polish to restore the sheen.

Removing stains from a bath

Brown and green stains, which are caused by iron and copper dissolved in the water, can appear below the taps in soft-water areas. In hard-water areas, grey limescale can build up. Both are the likely result of a dripping tap, so first stop the drip {see Taps).

A bath-stain remover, used following the instructions, will usually remove these stains. Make sure that it is designed for use on your bath type - enamel or plastic. Don't leave it on any longer than recommended as it could damage the bath surface.

Repairing a chipped enamel bath Time: depends on area

If the damage to the bath is extensive you can get it professionally renovated. Look in Yellow Pages under 'Bathroom Equipment'. It is possible to repair small chips yourself.

YOU WILL NEED Household cleaner, fine wire wool, epoxy-resin repair kit such as Plastic Padding, fine abrasive paper, matching bath enamel, small paint brush. Possibly: rust stabiliser.

Clean the area thoroughly with a powerful household cleaner, and then rinse. If the chip shows any sign of rust, apply rust stabiliser, following the maker's instructions.

After about three hours clean off the stabiliser with wire wool, then rinse and dry the area.

Following the manufacturer's instructions, mix up a small amount of epoxy- resin filler and fill the hole. Wipe away any surplus filler while it is still moist.

When the filler has set, after about 30 minutes, smooth it down with fine abrasive paper, avoiding the surrounding enamel. Then touch it up with matching bath enamel.

A partly blocked bath or basin Time: 1 hour or less

YOU WILL NEED Paperclip or piece of stiff wire, petroleum jelly, rubber gloves, plastic spoon, chemical drain cleaner.

First, check to see if hair, clinging below the plughole, is the culprit. If so, remove it with a piece of bent wire - such as a paperclip or haiipin.
