         Electrical Earthing and Bonding

Electrical Earthing and Bonding

In a normal electrical circuit, current flows to a light or an appliance through the live wire and flows back to the power station through the neutral wire, which is connected to the earth.

Occasionally, however , something goes wrong with this operation. If for example, a piece of flex insulation is damaged, allowing the live wire to make contact with the metal casing of an appliance, then the casing itself becomes live.

The danger which then arise is that someone will touch the live metalwork, providing the current with an alternative path to the earth and receiving a possibly lethal shock in the process.

It is for this reason that all electrical appliances apart from those double insulated must be connected to an earth wire. In the event of a fault, the earth wire first carries the current along to an earth terminal in the consumer unit. From here, a second wire then takes the current safely to earth usually via the metal sheathing of the Electricity Board’s underground service cable, but sometimes by way of a copper clad rod that is driven into the soil.

Because of its low resistance, the earth wire allows the current to flow at an increased rate and this in turn blows the appropriate fuse or circuit breaker, thereby cutting off the power supply.

Where the mains gas and water pipes are made of metal, these should be linked, or bonded, to the electrical earthing system. Other metalwork such as sinks, baths, tower rails, should also be bonded to earth.
