Safety measures are of paramount importance when working on electric wiring and appliances. Electricity is potentially dangerous, you domestic mains supply can give an electric shock powerful enough to kill. And with the electricity comes the risk of fire. You are protected against shocks and other hazards as long as you observe all the basic rules for safety :
Never tackle an electrical job unless it is within your capabilities. Always unplug an appliance before working on it. Before working on fixed wiring always turn off the power at the mains supply and remove the appropriate circuited fuse. Never touch parts of the plumbing system or gas piping while working with electricity. Avoid standing in a damp environment and never touch electrical equipment with wet hands. Never run a flex beneath carpets or floor covering in places where there is the possibility of the flex being stepped on. Never use an ordinary staple to secure a flex wire along the top of a skirting board or they may cut through the insulation and make contact with exposed wire. Always renew worn or damaged flex wire with new flex cable and do not use insulation tape to join two pieces of flex or to cover up frayed flex cable. Never overload a circuit by adding more lights or sockets than it can take. Never make the fundamental error of connecting a live wire to a neutral terminal or a neutral wire to a live terminal. Do not replace a blown fuse with one of a higher rating. Do not extend wiring so that it runs out of the house to provide light for the garage, greenhouse or swimming pool.
