Lighting Circuit The circuit which supplies electricity to lighting fixtures - the cable does not return to the consumer unit. In older houses there is a junction box circuit with joint boxes above the ceiling and from where cables run to the switches and roses. Most houses have a loop in circuit in which the main cable runs from one ceiling to another. In the average home there are two lighting circuits, each one supporting 8-10 lighting fixtures. ( 1 mm - 5 amps ) Radial Circuit The circuit which supplies electricity to sockets or to appliances is a circuit where the cable - wiring doesn’t return to the consumer unit. In older houses radial circuits were used for standard 13 amps sockets. Most used for high wattage equipment such as cookers. Type of cables used - wire used : 6 mm - 10 mm - 30 amp - 45 amp Ring Circuit The circuit which supplies electricity to sockets and appliances - in which the cable returns to the consumer unit. Fuses of 13 amps in value are set along the circuit, spur cables can be used if extra sockets are required. In most homes there are two ring circuits , one upstairs and one downstairs . Cables used : 2.5 mm Fuse - cartridge 30 amp Home - Flat rewiring Old Consumer Unit Before 1950 there were no consumer units and that means every circuit its own fuse box and a main switch. Standard Consumer Units Each circuit has its own fuses which is of rewirable or cartridge type. The main switch is used is used to cut off or to restore the electricity supply to the house. Modern Consumer Unit There are no fuses, its made of Miniature Circuit Breakers - MCBs which switch off if there is a fault or if the circuit is over loaded. To reset correct the fault and press or flick the switch on the Miniature Circuit Breakers - MCB. There is an RCCB - residual circuit current breaker instead of a main switch and this provides protection against electrical shocks - for safety reasons. NICEIC - the National Inspection Council for Electrical Contracting is an independent organization which has a code of practice to safeguards customers against defective workmanship. Our London Electricians are operating all over London - offices and homes , from full re-wiring to new electrical installations.
