Planning and Design - Kitchen Fiiting - Installation

Kitchen Design, fitting and installation

Planning and design

The first and most important thing to get clear in your mind is what you want from your kitchen before the design and kitchen installation takes place. Define the purpose of the space and how often it will be used. Look at your lifestyle and circumstances. Do you live alone ? Are you a professional couple without children or a family with children? How many people will be using the kitchen on a regular basis?

Gauge how often it will be used and how much storage spaces will be needed. The questions that will help you get these answers are : do you enjoy cooking and entertaining or do you tend to buy ready-prepared foods or eat out a lot? If you entertain, how many people do you have on average - mostly small suppers for four or six or grand dinners for ten and twelve? Do you usually shop on a daily or a weekly or a monthly basis? Is food storage to be for mainly fresh produce or for frozen and tinned goods? This should give you an idea of how much dry or shelf storage you should allow for and how big a fridge you might need.

It is important to have an accurate idea of the expected use of the kitchen for a good design and kitchen installation. For example, an urban-dwelling, busy professional couple who have the occasional pasta or pre-prepared meal at home will not require the same size of kitchen or as much storage space as the family with three small children who live in the country and eat most meals at home. You might also consider building a kitchen extension to solve a space problem, in London most kitchen extension can be build without full Planning Permission - only Building Notice required.

For example, will the kitchen area be used for family and friends to sit around and talk, watch television and relax? Is the kitchen also a laundry area, with a washing machine or a tumble drier installed? Assess the dimensions and the pros and cons of the area. This will give you a clear understanding of the layout and advantages and disadvantages of the space. How many doors are there - do they open in or out and are all of them needed? Are there any unusual pillars, chimney breasts or features that cause the walls to be irregular rather than flat ? If the kitchen room is small can other be converted into a kitchen or the laundry me moved elsewhere, lets say into the bathroom or a hall or passageway. If there is any feasible way of extending the space, by knocking through into another room, re-arranging the space or adding an extension such as a conservatory, you should have a budged for the building works as well as fitting the kitchen.

When planning a small kitchen draw inspiration from similar sized areas such a ship's galley or a caravan or mobile home. In this situations the wall space is utilized with half shelves fitted under overhead cupboards but still giving access to the worktop. Finally, look around and see how much natural light there is in the room. Consider ways of obtaining or increasing the amount of daylight through installation of a roof skylight or french doors.

Also look to see if there is access to outside walls for ducting. This is a particularly important in flats or apartments where kitchens may be sited in the interior of the building. Machines such as extractors and tumble driers require an outer wall for exist pipes. Locate the waste outlets and water pipes also - you could ask London Plumbers for major plumbing, such as the sink and dishwasher, should ideally be installed by professional plumbers in London.
