Gable vent A gable vent is useful both as a decorative unit and to ventilate the roof space. The standard vent is manufactured as a one piece unit providing free air passage. Dpm's should be incorporated between the vent and the inner wall and placed in such a way as not to restrict air movement. It is also recommended that a fine wire mesh is placed or fixed over the airway to stop any unwanted visitors entering the roof area. Corbels Corbels are a traditional means of creating a supporting and decorative element at roof level A wide selection of standard units are available and being finished on all sides can be used either left or right handed. Additionally a starter/kneeler unit can be produced which sits on top of the corbel to achieve the angle rise for the roof coping and match the pitch of the roof. Chimney coping Chimney copings are constructed from four identical sections with a frog to ensure a good key. They should be butt jointed and fixed to the chimney stack using in-situ concrete. The coping can be ordered oversized and cut to the required lengths on site. Pier caps Pier caps are available in a range of patterns (flat or weathered 2 or 4 ways) and sizes that all feature a drip groove all round. Coping Copings are dimensioned to suit standard wall configurations. Drip grooves are incorporated as standard on all units unless otherwise advised and can be supplied with mitres or fair ends. Keystones Keystones can be incorporated into brickwork or stone, over windows or as a special feature over door openings. Keystones are a small but inexpensive detail, enhancing any new home. The applied keystone is supplied loose for use with a 215mm high cast stone head and is securely fixed by mortar to the top bed of the head and masonry adhesive to both vertical surfaces of the head and keystone. Prevention of moisture penetration The inclusion of damp proof membranes/cavity trays is essential to prevent the ingress of rain and damp. At heads or where label mouldings are used, cavity trays with stop ends should be incorporated over openings in external cavity walls and extend a minimum of 150mm on either side of the opening. The tray should be installed to direct water towards weep holes in the external leaf At jambs and cills a continuous damp proof membrane (DPM) should be included behind and for the full length and width of the sections extending into the cavity where required. Under copings to freestanding walls, parapet walls, etc. a continuous dpm sandwiched in mortar and projecting beyond each face of the wall a minimum of 5mm should be provided. Continuity of all damp proof membranes should be ensured by overlapping by at least 100mm.
