Topcoating Painting and Decorating Gloss paint is stiffer than undercoat,so needs to be applied more firmly-although the final laying-off strokes should be,if anything, even more delicate than before. It is important ,too, that each new brushload should reach the previous one while the wet edge is still wet,and not sticky-with gloss paint, runs and coutaining can happen very easily.Otherwise, the technique is the same as for the undercoat. One point is worth watching, however, because of its shiny surface, gloss paint can play tricks in poor light, and for this stage of the job only daylight is really good enough. Gloss paint is touch dry from three to six hours after application, but takes 16 to 24 hours to dry thoroughly.Edges subject to wear or knocks are best left alone for two or three days while the paint really hardens. Care of brushes. Poor maintenance, tests have proved, wears out paint brushes much faster than painting does-and there is nothing like a dirty brush for ensuring that the next paint job will be a shoddy one. If you have to leave a particularly long job unfinished in the middle of a coat, brushes full of paint can be left for a day or two suspended in water.Never let a brush stand on its bristles, since this may ‘cripple’-distort-the ends.Suspend the brush by slotting a piece of wire or wood dowel through a hole drilled through the handle. For longer periods,of three or four days, thinning agents should be used instead of water. When resuming painting, rough –dry the brush on a piece of clean board to remove excess water or thinning agent. It is important to remove thinners, since they dilute the paint and produce a patchy surface .However,it is always best to finish a coat of paint completely,as resuming the work half-way through will produce an uneven result. Brushes should be cleaned thoroughly after each change of paint.Working from the stock towards the tip ,scrape of excess paint with the back of a knife and sluice the brush in thinners or a proprietary brush cleaner, finishing off with warm water and soap or detergent, and then clean waterOnce dry,the bristles should be wrapped in clean newspaper, fiwed with a rubber band, and the brush stored flatExposed bristles are subject to attack by moths.
